Almost everything that makes a good Star Wars flick is present–ominous voiceovers, lightsaber battles in snow, nobodies in the desert, and a complete and total void of Jar Jar Binks. Even the acting, what little we see of it, seems a galaxy better than the wooden stumbling of Hayden Christensen‘s portrayal of a young Darth Vader in love. This trailer focuses on Daisey Ridely’s Rey, about whom we know very little, and features a ton of dogfights between TIE fighters and X-wings, about which we can never know enough. Conspicuously missing from action, as he was from the character posters released earlier this week, is Mark Hammill’s Luke Skywalker, slayer of Death Stars, awkward sister-kisser, and last known Jedi knight in the universe. In the Star Wars universe before The Force Awakens was announced, Luke spent his post-victory time training a new generation of Jedi, falling in love with a smuggler named Mara Jade, and raising a son named Ben. Since the new film means the future Star Wars previously written in books is now just rumor and legend, we have absolutely no idea what Luke is up to in The Force Awakens.
